When a Valid, Enforceable Contract Exists:

For an employment contract to be valid and enforceable, it must have a starting date, and ending date and a salary. Most “offer letters” are NOT contracts because the letter usually does not have an ending date. It may have many provisions about benefits, salary, bonuses and so forth, but if it does not have a definite end date, it is not enforceable and the general rule above will still control the employment relationship.

All Other Forms of Protection for Employees:

There are other laws that protect the employee, such as the Family Medical Leave Act which provides for job protected leave due to the medical condition of the employee or a family member, and the Fair Labor Standards Act (more commonly referred to as the overtime law), which provides for the payment of overtime compensation for all hours worked over forty (40).
